Leaf Group 4: Paripinnate Cold Hardy Chamaedoreas

Characteristics

  • A distinguishing characteristic is that the rachis ends in a pair of leaves rather than a single spear. This is called "Paripinnate."
  • They have soft pinnate, wedge, ovoid or slightly pointed leaflets.
  • The angles of leaf attachment are fairly uniform on the rachis.
  • Spacing along the rachis is two ranked rather than opposite.
  • Chamaedoreas are usually relatively small under-story, shade loving plants. They sport ½ to 2" stems more like bamboo.
  • Trunks are single or clustering and green or tan.
