The Sabal is the original prototype palm: as the most primitive, it is probable that all other palm genera evolved from the Sabal. Their fossils have been discovered in many parts of the world including Alaska! The rachis (center stem) that attaches the leaf to the trunk, extends through the entire leaf much like it does in feather (pinnate) palms, but the leaflets are bonded together instead of separated. This construction creates a V-shaped leaf structure when viewed from the top-front. All the species are thornless.
